One man has taken the fight against fake news into his own hands after his local pizza restaurant became embroiled in a dangerous conspiracy theory.
On Dec. 4,horse humping sex videos police arrested 28-year-old, Edgar Maddison Welch of Salisbury, North Carolina, after he entered Comet Ping Pong restaurant in Washington D.C. armed with an assault rifle and fired a shot. Welch claimed he was investigating conspiracy theories about Hillary Clinton and campaign chairman John Podesta running a child sex ring inside of a pizza place, referred to as "#Pizzagate."

The dangerous incident that took place over the weekend inspired local man Erick Sanchez to take action. He wanted to lend support to Comet Ping Pong's employees, including owner James Alefantis, and help stop the spread of fake news.
Following the incident, the public relations consultant created a Facebook event entitled, Stand With Comet, asking people to visit the family-friendly pizzeria that "has come under attack in the age of fake news" on Dec. 9.
Sanchez had been following the "pizzagate" conspiracy theories prior to Sunday's incident, "but as any rationally minded person would think, it struck me as more of a nuisance," he told Mashable over the phone."I thought it was being used initially as kind of a ploy to turn up support against the Clinton campaign and it obviously came to a really dangerous head yesterday," he said, noting his surprise that the fake news cycle had spread so far.
Like many other locals, as a patron of the restaurant, Sanchez explainedhe was shaken up by the dangerous activity that occurred, especially since it resulted from the spreading of complete lies. "I was appalled and disgusted that someone would be persuaded by false, disgusting lies to carry out such a heinous act," he said. "As a Washingtonian, I couldn't believe this would happen in my backyard. Thankfully, no one was hurt and the situation ended peacefully, but these lies are still being spread by fake news outlets."
On the topic of fake news, Sanchez acknowledged that the rising presence is clearly becoming a serious threat to safety and must be stopped. Fake news has been an ongoing issue since the U.S. election campaign, with Facebook and Google putting in place measures to help prevent its spread.
"I think it's clear after this past election that we've truly become a society that is emotionally impacted by what unfolds on social media," Sanchez said. "As much as we've worked to supply fact checkers, the damage, in many cases, has already been done and in this instance it became dangerous."

Sanchez called attention to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter as some of the top offenders in the spreading of this kind of news. "Twitter in particular is where I noticed of a lot of these links back to fake news sites and InfoWars ... all these other groups that are trying to perpetuate this ridiculous narrative," he said. "It’s upsetting more than anything."
Sanchez believes that it is up to social media networks and law enforcement agencies to crack down on the distribution of fake news and misconstrued facts, along with any threats made, such as those Comet owner,James Alefantis, received on Instagram just days before the presidential election.
He wants others to imagine how unsafe the staff of Comet must be left feeling after the incident, and hopes this event will serve as a positive way to offer "a little light" in all this darkness. "Thank the staff for being a part of our community. Tell them you have their back. Tip well. Post your support on social media ... tell your friends about it, post it on your neighborhood listserv, or write a story about it, because it all helps," Sanchez wrote on the event page.
Since the terrifying incident and arrest, the supportive hashtag, #StandWithComet has been circulating, which many are using to offer their sentiments online.

The event serves as a place of positivity, and has inspired other concerned bystanders like Facebook user Olivia Guerrierito encourage kindness. After noticing the restaurant was receiving some serious backlash following the arrest, Guerrieri commented on the event page urging others to write positive reviews on Comet's Facebook page. "They're currently being inundated with 1-star reviews spreading this fake news. Help get them back up to 5 stars where they belong!"
Despite the many messages of support from the community, and throughout his resilient efforts to move forward, Sanchez admitted he continues to see "trolls who are perpetuating the narrative that led to the events that unfolded yesterday," discussing the conspiracy online and even on his very own event page.
Nevertheless, "Washingtonians are resilient," he said. "We have a habit of coming together to stand up against threats and hate. We’ve been fortunate enough to get in touch with one of the members of Comet’s management and they’re enthusiastic about it," he shared. As of Dec. 5, 3.5K people have already marked themselves interested in Sanchez's all-day event.
He hopes other events come together in honor of Comet and those surrounding businesses who have been impacted by the fake news-induced harassment.
"I think right now, community members are still working through their outrage in terms of what happened. Comet Ping Pong Pizza is a family establishment, and I think folks, particularly parents, are in a position where they're once again wondering what safe spaces exist in our community," he said.
Mashable reached out to Comet Ping Pong and Facebook for further comment.
