We still haven't reached a stage where full-length virtual reality films are ex libris eroticesthe norm. However the studio behind the live-action version of Assassin's Creedis hoping to give us a taste of cinema to come.
"Assassin's Creed VR Experience," from 20th Century Fox, combines the Oculus Rift and an AMD Radeon graphics card-powered Alienware computer to take fans inside a short, VR version of the forthcoming film starring Michael Fassbender.
Using the same time traveling dynamic as the game and the film, you first meet a scientist who sends you back into the world of parkour-loving assassins, giving you a first-person VR view that was filmed on the same set used in the cinematic version.
I tried it and was impressed -- especially with the Fassbender cameo. But with such a short run time -- less than 10 minutes -- the experience is really just a tease for what will be possible when studios go all in with cinematic VR experiences in the future.
The experience will be available on Dec. 2 at VR kiosks in select AMC theaters in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin and New York in conjunction with the release of the film.
What that means is if you're in one of those cities and you've never tried the Oculus Rift, you have until January 1, 2017 to get your first, free taste of the high-end VR system.
Everyone else will soon be able to download the gratis VR experience for the Samsung Gear VR or check it via Facebook 360 video.
